Advent 2018

Family Guide

Talking about Advent with your children this Christmas season.

Advent is a season of the year in which Christians set aside time to prepare and wait for the celebration (birthday party) of Jesus. Believers from all around the world celebrate this time together. As a family of faith, we look forward to Jesus coming again and we look back to remember how God has shown His great love and mercies to His children over and over again.

Advent literally means something is “coming.” For believers in Christ, it’s an opportunity to set aside time during the month before Christmas to celebrate Jesus’ birth and to look forward to Him coming again. For generations, God promised He would send a Savior to rescue His children from their sin. God did just that; He sent His One and only Son to be with us, to live among us as Emmanuel—God with us. Always with us.

We encourage you to gather your family during this upcoming season and spend time together preparing your hearts for the celebration of Christmas. Use this time to remember God’s Story, pray together, and look around for signs of His presence. The prayer below is for you to say together daily during Advent. It gives each member in the family a part to say. By praying this together, we remind each other God is with us, and we will have eyes to see Jesus in new and fresh ways. May God richly bless this Advent season!

Isaiah 9:6 niv

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
