The King We’ve Always Longed For

by Clark Nolan | Dec. 4, 2018

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

ISAIAH 9:6 ESV

Do you hope for a time when the world will experience peace? Consider the upheaval of governments around the world. Some government transitions are right, just, and fair. Others are full of distrust, bribery, and violent coups. In governments across the globe, we have observed the abuse of power, the practice of immorality, and the dishonesty of promises not kept. If you are like me, there is a deep, unspoken longing for the world to be made right, just, and fair. A hope for peace…the kind of peace that only comes when the one in charge is everything we have ever wanted in a leader. So, in the midst of the world’s unstable political environment, with its instability and vitriol, I wake up this morning longing for something better. Someone better!

“This King is worth your hope today.”

In Isaiah 9:6-7, we find a prophet acknowledging Judah’s corruption and judgment. Yet, Isaiah is also pointing to a future promise to be fulfilled. It is a future reality when the King we’ve always longed for will lead a government that, deep in our hearts, we have always desired. In the passage today we have a comprehensive description of the child who would be made King. We are given a glimpse into the very character and nature of God-made-manifest in a real time and place. Isaiah points Judah to a tangible time, place, and person when the leader they have always longed for will reign and rule. Consider the description: a child born into humanity so as to die in our place, a son given who would make us fellow heirs, a Wonderful Counselor who would be our helper, a Mighty God who would be our warrior, an Everlasting Father who would make a way for us to call God “Abba! Father!”, and a Prince of Peace who would be our king that would put war to rest. The best part of this future? It has no end. It is eternal. This King will not be voted out. This King will not resign. This King will not die. This King is worth your hope today. Take courage. God is in control. He is working His plan. He is sovereign.

And by the way, as you start your day this Christmas season, be grateful for the freedom we have as you read this. Pray for our government leaders – local, state, and national. Pray for those in charge by name. Pray for their families. Pray that they would place their faith in the Son who was given and trust Jesus to be their Prince of Peace.

This was so comforting to read this morning. It helped me to really break down this beautiful scripture of HOPE. I was able to be still…It took on new meaning and spoke to my heart in this season of change…..I was able to be thankful for the Gift if Jesus Christ and rest in His loving presence this morning!

It seems that all around us a hurricane is brewing and beginning to rage, promising devastation. It’s comforting to know that we can be at peace in the midst of it all because we have a great King who rules over it all! He counsels us, holds all things together, lovingly cares for us, and is a place of redugenin times of trouble. What joy it is to worship, celebrate, and be subject to such a great King! Thank you so much for sharing.
